Identity document verification results

This article explains what the verification checks, what each result means, and what to do about it.

Identity document verification checks that an identity document is genuine, still valid, and consistent with the details you declared. Use it to confirm who you are dealing with before signing, onboarding or paying someone.

⚠️ These Verifications are only available for API customers, check eligibility criteria here : Use Verify test credits included in your Plan.

What you submit

  1. Open Verify, then Verifications, then click New verification.

  2. Select Identity document.

  3. Choose the Document type: National ID card, Passport, Residence permit or Italian health card (tessera sanitaria).

  4. Upload the document. Add the back side in the second slot when the document has one — an ID card or residence permit is only fully checked when both sides are provided.

  5. Enter the holder's First name and Last name as you expect them to appear.

  6. Optionally, open Optional parameters to set an owner first name and last name to compared against the extracted data, Minimum age, a Maximum age, or a list of Prohibited issuing countries.

Accepted formats are PNG, JPEG, JPG and PDF, up to 10 MB.

💡 Tip: The document type and the optional parameters are checks, not filters. If you declare a passport and upload an ID card, the verification fails on that mismatch — so only set them when you genuinely want them enforced.

What we check

Four families of checks run on every submission.

Capture quality

Whether the image can actually be read: sharpness, contrast, framing, resolution and page count.

Document authenticity

Whether the document is what it claims to be. This covers the security features of the document model, the fonts, the colour behaviour of the identity photo, the presence of a specimen marker, and, on French documents, the 2D-Doc barcode.

Internal consistency

Whether the document agrees with itself. The details printed on the document are compared against its machine-readable zone — the two lines of code at the bottom of a passport or ID card — and against the document number format.

Consistency with your declared data

Whether the document matches what you entered: the first name, the last name, and any age or country rules you set.

Reading the result

Every verification ends in one of four states.

Result

What it means

Pending

Still running. Results usually arrive within seconds.

Verified

The document is genuine, valid, and consistent with what you declared.

Failed

The check completed and found a problem.

Inconclusive

The check could not be completed. Nothing was concluded about the document.

The details page leads with a plain-language verdict:

  • Verified — "The identity document has been successfully verified."

  • Failed — "We've detected some issues with this document or the data associated with it."

  • Inconclusive — "The verification could not be completed. Check the reasons below."

Below the verdict, a callout lists every reason behind the result. A verification often carries several reasons at once — read them all, as they can point to different problems.

The data we extract

When the document is readable, the Extracted data section shows what was found on it, each row marked Valid, Failed or Unknown:

  • First name, last name and birth name

  • Date and place of birth

  • Gender

  • Address printed on the document

  • Document type and issuing country

  • Issue date and expiry date

  • Document number

  • Machine-readable zone

  • National identification number, for the countries that print one

Fields that do not appear on the document are left empty. A partially filled panel is normal — a passport carries no address, and many documents carry no national identification number.

ℹ️ Note: The machine-readable zone and national identification numbers are sensitive, so they are shown partially masked.

Why a verification fails

A Failed result means the check ran and found something wrong. The reasons fall into three groups.

The document has a problem

The document could not be recognised, is expired, or a required field is missing from it — the name, the date of birth, the issue or expiry date, or the document number. This group also covers a missing front or back side
.

What to do: Ask for a different document, or re-upload with both sides included. Expiry is judged against the document model, and the 15-year validity extension on French ID cards is already applied.

The document looks altered

Security features did not verify, fonts do not look authentic, the dates are inconsistent with the document model, the identity photo is missing or its colours do not behave as expected, the document is a known specimen, or the printed details disagree with the machine-readable zone. For PDFs, this also covers annotations and traces left by PDF editors.

What to do: Treat this as a fraud signal and review it manually. Do not simply ask for another upload of the same document.

The document does not match what you declared

The first name, last name or document number read from the document differs from what you entered — sometimes because the two names were entered the wrong way round. This group also covers the optional rules: the holder is below your minimum age, above your maximum age, or the document was issued by a country you excluded.

What to do: Check for a spelling mistake or inverted names, correct the details and run the verification again. If the age or country rule is what triggered it, the document is genuine and your own policy is what rejected it.

Why a verification is inconclusive

An Inconclusive result is not a rejection — it means we could not reach a conclusion. It is never counted against your included tests.

The file cannot be used

The format is not supported, the image is too small or too large, the file is too heavy, or it has too many pages.

What to do: Re-upload within the accepted formats and limits.

The image cannot be read

The image is blurry, lacks contrast, is badly framed, contains no readable text, or its resolution is too low. This group also covers a machine-readable zone that is truncated, glared out, or absent — and a document that does not match the document type you selected.

What to do: Take a new photo in good, even light, with the whole document in frame and no flash glare, then upload again.

A technical issue occurred

The verification could not be completed for reasons unrelated to your document.

What to do: Run the verification again shortly. This costs you nothing.

Download the audit trail

On a Verified or Failed verification, click Download audit trail on the details page to get a PDF record of the check.

The audit trail is not available on Pending or Inconclusive verifications, because no conclusion was reached.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my verification have several reasons?

Because several checks can fail on the same document. All reasons are shown so you can see the full picture rather than only the first problem found.

The document is genuine but the verification failed. Why?

The most common causes are a spelling difference between the declared name and the printed name, inverted first and last names, a missing back side, or one of your own optional rules being triggered. Check the reasons listed on the details page.

What is the machine-readable zone?

The block of coded characters printed at the bottom of a passport or ID card. It repeats the holder's details in a standard format, so comparing it against the printed text is a reliable way to detect an altered document.

The extracted data section has empty fields. Is that a problem?

No. Fields are left empty when the information is not present on the document.

Can I re-run a verification?

Yes. Create a new verification with the corrected details or a better image. Each attempt draws on your allowance unless it comes back Inconclusive.

How long is the data kept?

Personal data is automatically removed after the retention period. Once that happens, the result and its reasons remain visible, but the extracted data no longer is. Download the audit trail beforehand if you need a lasting record.
