Bank account verification results

This article explains what the verification checks, what each result means, and what to do about it.

Bank account verification confirms that an IBAN really belongs to the person you expect. The account is checked against the VOP network, where participating banks confirm or deny the match. Use it before setting up a direct debit, paying a supplier, or issuing a refund, to protect against payment fraud and mistyped account details.

⚠️ These Verifications are only available for API customers, check eligibility criteria here : Use Verify test credits included in your Plan.

What you submit

  1. Open Verify, then Verifications, then click New verification.

  2. Select Bank account.

  3. Choose a Verification method:

    • Manual IBAN entry — type the IBAN yourself.

    • From IBAN document — upload a bank details document (RIB) and let us read the IBAN from it. PDF only, up to 10 MB.

  4. Enter the Expected owner first name and last name.

  5. Click Verify account.

ℹ️ Note: The account holder must be an individual. Checking an account held by a company is not supported here.

What we check

The IBAN is sent to the VOP network, which routes it to the bank that holds the account. That bank compares the name you declared against the name on its own records and answers whether they agree.

This is a live check against the bank's own data, not a format check. A structurally valid IBAN can still come back as unverified.

When you upload a document rather than typing the IBAN, the IBAN is read from the document first, then checked.

Reading the result

Result

What it means

Pending

Still running. Results usually arrive within seconds.

Verified

The account exists and belongs to the person you declared.

Failed

The check completed and the account or the name is a problem.

Inconclusive

The account could not be checked.

The details page leads with a plain-language verdict:

  • Verified — "The IBAN has been successfully verified against the holder's details provided."

  • Failed — "The Bank Account IBAN Verification failed due to certain issues."

  • Inconclusive — "The bank did not answer conclusively. The account could not be confirmed."

Below the verdict, a callout lists the reasons behind the result.

⚠️ Important: Banks never disclose the account holder's identity. No name, no bank and no account status is returned to you — only whether the details you supplied agree with the bank's records. The verdict and its reasons are the whole result.

When you submitted a document, the details page also shows the IBAN that was read from it, so you can confirm the right account was used.

Why a verification fails

A Failed result means the check completed and returned a negative answer.

The name does not match the account holder

The bank holds this account under a different name. There are two degrees of this, and they call for different responses:

  • No match — the declared name bears no relation to the account holder. Treat this as a genuine red flag.

  • Close match — the names are nearly the same but not identical. This is very often a spelling difference, a missing accent, a middle name or a married versus birth name, rather than fraud.

What to do: On a close match, check the spelling against an official document and run the verification again. On a no match, confirm with the person whose account this actually is before making any payment.

The account is closed

The bank recognises the account, but it was closed within the past 14 months.

What to do: Ask for current bank details.

The account cannot be checked

The account is not eligible for this type of verification, or the network could not process the request.

What to do: Ask for a different account, or verify these details another way. Re-running the same IBAN will not change the answer.

Why a verification is inconclusive

An Inconclusive result means no answer was obtained. It is never counted against your included tests.

The account is outside coverage

Either the IBAN belongs to a country that is not covered, or the country is covered but the account's bank does not take part in the SEPAmail network. Not every bank participates, so an ordinary account at an ordinary bank can still be unreachable.

What to do: Neither is a mistake on your part, and retrying the same IBAN will not help. Ask for an account at a different bank, or verify these details another way.

Accounts can be checked in: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain.

The document could not be used

The file could not be read, or no IBAN could be found in it.

What to do: Upload a clearer copy of the bank details document, or switch to Manual IBAN entry and type the IBAN instead.

A technical issue occurred

The verification could not be completed for reasons unrelated to the account.

What to do: Run the verification again shortly. This costs you nothing.

Download the audit trail

On a Verified or Failed verification, click Download audit trail on the details page to get a PDF record of the check.

The audit trail is not available on Pending or Inconclusive verifications, because no conclusion was reached.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the result not show the account holder's name?

Banks do not disclose it. They only confirm or deny that the name you supplied matches their records. This protects the account holder's privacy while still letting you detect a wrong or fraudulent account.

What is the difference between a close match and a no match?

A close match means the names are nearly identical — usually a spelling, accent or name-order difference. A no match means they are unrelated. A close match is normally worth correcting and re-running; a no match is worth investigating.

The IBAN is definitely correct, but the result is inconclusive. Why?

The account's bank most likely does not take part in the SEPAmail network. The IBAN is valid, it simply cannot be checked this way.

Can I verify a company's bank account?

Not with this verification. The account holder must be an individual.

Does an inconclusive result use up one of my tests?

No. Only Verified and Failed results are counted.

Can I check an account outside the countries listed?

No. IBANs from other countries come back as Inconclusive, at no cost to your allowance.

How long is the result kept?

Bank account verification results are retained without the anonymisation step that applies to identity and company verifications. You can still download the audit trail for your own records.
